Bio

Dr. Andreana Prichard is the Wick Cary Associate Professor of Honors and African History in the Honors College at the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Prichard is an historian of East Africa. Her first book, Sisters in Spirit: Christianity, Affect, and Community Building in East Africa, 1860-1960, was released in 2017 with Michigan State University Press. The book uses the rich personal stories of a group of female African lay evangelists to tell an intimate history of the Universities’ Mission to Central Africa, and of the Tanzanian nation.

Dr. Prichard’s current research agenda deals generally with the history of evangelical child sponsorship initiatives in East Africa and the American Bible Belt.

At OU, Dr. Prichard teaches courses on the history of Africa, the relationship between the West and Africa, and on the history of gender, Christianity, and development in Africa. She generally undertakes service at OU related to¬†student research grants and fellowships, women’s issues at OU, OU’s¬†African Studies Institute, and The Center for Peace and Development.
